MLB Players Trust to Host 24 Students in Seattle for the 2023 STEM League Global Championship

Learn Fresh and MLB Players Trust announce educational event to be held during All-Star Weekend, with welcome from Mariners All-Star Julio Rodríguez

NEW YORK, July 5 – Twenty-four students from across the United States as well as Puerto Rico, Belize, and Colombia will convene in Seattle for the 2023 MLB Players STEM League Global Championship, the culmination event of an educational initiative started in partnership with Learn Fresh and the MLB Players Trust. The MLB Players STEM League is a baseball-inspired board game that brings the energy of the game to life while cultivating students’ math and social-emotional skills.

Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez, a 2023 All-Star selection and Home Run Derby contestant, surprised the students chosen to participate with a congratulatory video message welcoming them to the Emerald City. Rodríguez is joined by a number of other Major League Players offering words of encouragement.

In its second year, the Global Championship will be held July 8-11 in conjunction with MLB All-Star Week in Seattle. The program was launched in the U.S. in 2021 through a partnership between Learn Fresh and the Players Trust and has since grown to include students in Latin America and the Caribbean. The first Global Championship took place in Los Angeles during the 2022 All-Star Game week, and students in the U.S., the Bahamas and Colombia have since competed in regional tournaments.

During this year’s Global Championship, students will have an opportunity to explore the city of Seattle, engage with NASA astronaut Anne McClain through an interactive STEM activation, and participate in All-Star festivities. McClain is a Spokane, Wash., native and played softball at Spokane Community College.

Seattle Sounders FC will also participate in this year’s Global Championship. The Tournament will be hosted by Sounders Communications Manager Gisselle Pichardo as well as Emmy award-winning sportscaster and Sounders FC sideline reporter Michelle Ludtka Furbush. Official Seattle Sounders DJ Chris Charma will provide music during the event.
