Tigers utility man awarded $10,000 grant to support his charitable work with families and communities

NEW YORK, April 29 – The Players Trust, the charitable arm of the Major League Baseball Players Association, announced today that Detroit Tigers utility player Zach McKinstry is the first Most Valuable Philanthropist of 2025. The Players Trust will award a $10,000 grant in McKinstry’s honor to support his work with BBQ Mission, a Phoenix-area nonprofit that feeds unhoused members of the community, and NW Futures School of Development, an organization helping young players in the Pacific Northwest grow their skills on the diamond regardless of economic status.

A 30-year-old native of Toledo, Ohio, McKinstry played college baseball for the Central Michigan University Chippewas and was drafted in 2016 by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 33rd round. He made his MLB debut in 2020 for the Dodgers and has since enjoyed stints with the Cubs and Tigers.

“Zach is a powerful example of how athletes can use their platforms to make a lasting impact,” said Players Trust Executive Director Amy Hever. “The Players Trust is proud to recognize Zach—not only for the lives he’s already touched, but for the standard he sets for athletes everywhere who want to give back.”

“Over my career I have felt a calling to serve others, and the opportunity to do so has been one of the most fulfilling pursuits in my life,” said McKinstry. “I’m so grateful for the support of the Players Trust and my teammates across the league, and I’m thrilled to call more attention to the important work of BBQ Mission and the NW Futures School of Development.”

The “MVP” award is given six times throughout the season to an active Player who demonstrates an altruistic spirit and positive social impact beyond the diamond. Each winner receives a $10,000 grant from the Players Trust to his chosen cause.

For over 25 years, Players have been committed to making a difference by contributing their funding, time, talent and passion to help communities in need and encouraging others to get involved. Through the Players Trust, Players have supported a wide range of programs, granting tens of millions of dollars to make a positive impact on the lives of fans and youth organizations.
